Handmade fine-tuned individual componentsI have chosen to adopt an unhurried and less commercial approach to the guitar building process, preferring to allocate time on a needs basis, the final goal being to fine tune each individual component to their optimal size, weight, thickness and resonance. These individual components which form the core structure of the instrument, then have to be carefully balanced during the assembly process in order to produce a concert level guitar. A classic Spanish timbre Although all handbuilt guitars display marked differences of tone and sonority, my instruments consistently have in common deep resonant basses, clear solid trebles and excellent balance and sustain. Innovation and tradition Although as a guitar maker I greatly admire the fine concert classical guitars of luthiers such as Manuel Ramirez and Herman Hauser, I am also interested in new directions in classical guitar luthiery. Rather though than embrace more modern and controversial materials such as carbon fibre, nomex and ultra-thin soundboards, I prefer to use traditional woods and thicknesses, but employing alternative bracing patterns and soundhole location, as can be seen in the ES model. French polish finish My guitars are patiently and lovingly finished using a beautiful pale French polish applied by hand over a 40 day period. (Why French polish?) |
